Enjoy First Fall, Oklahoma. Summer Isn’t Finished Yet

With a little break in the super-high summer heat, Oklahoma is looking forward to a very small stretch of 90-degree days ahead, but it's important to note that summer is far from over.

If you've lived in the Sooner State for a while, you know the drill. If you're new, this is what we call First Fall. It doesn't even matter that it's still summer. Mid-to-upper 90s is a normal Oklahoma fall, but this is just a taste of it.

I get it, you look around and see all the leaves on the ground, you think fall... But it's really just the trees trying to survive this heat.

Here's where we're at with the Oklahoma weather seasons... First Fall. It's going to be a couple of glorious days. Barbecue weather. And if it weren't so dang dry, it'd be prime fire pit after sunset weather, but it's just a blip in the summer season.

By the end of the week, we'll bounce back into Second Summer. Triple-digits again. Hot and dry, yes, but not as miserable as the 110+ temps. 100-105 degrees is pretty normal.

Eventually, the winds will turn out of the north and bring us Second Fall. You'll know it when you walk out of the house and feel it. It'll still be 80-ish degrees as you leave the house in the morning, but there will be a very subtle chill in the air. That's the turning point, but not the final word, because summer won't be done.

Last Summer always pops up in the last half of September. Sometimes it's a few days, other times a week or two of lingering 100-degree days. They'll linger, but they won't last.

Actual Fall hits right after. Sometimes it shows up at the end of September in really early years, but it has waited as late as Halloween in the past. And since we're on such a weird weather pattern over the last 12 months, adding in El Niño, it's impossible to predict when this will happen.

We've had years when we didn't even cover the pool until nearly Thanksgiving, and others when our first big snowfall hit October 5th. It's anybody's guess.
