Oklahoma Food Battles: Braum’s Sauce vs Cane’s Sauce
This topic caught me off guard, so I'd be surprised if you knew there was a secret and very personal Oklahoma battle of opinions raging about who offers up the better sauce.
Whether you're dipping your fries or your chicken in it, it seems the Sooner State is split fairly equally between Oklahoma's own Braum's and Raising Cane's signature sauces.
Are they really that different?
Of the people I've talked to who prefer Cane's delicious sauce, most had no idea that Braum's even offered something similar. Locally in Lawton, it's only been in the last few months that people have started to realize Braum's has a fry-type sauce with the few new locations that have opened up.
A few of us went out of our way to try both in one lunch, and if you were to ask me, they taste the same. Like down to the ingredient, same/same... but different.
Of those who have had both, they agree. It's so similar, you could mix and match sauces with food options pretty much at will... and that's where Cane's sort of took a lead.
It came down to the chicken.
While there's no substituting the country gravy on chicken tenders and yeast rolls over at Braum's, the chicken itself was overwhelmingly voted better at Cane's, and I'm not sure anyone could really deny it.
Even though the Oklahoma in me and most others really want to back Braum's, their chicken strips are reminiscent of the hot lunch in grade school. Incredibly tiny and heavily breaded.
This is the biggest edge Cane's has over Oklahoma's ice cream and dairy store, plus I think Braum's fries are almost always soggy and floppy. Advantage again, Cane's.
But it's about the sauce.
I would wager that anyone could pick up sauce from both Cane's and Braum's and serve it up side by side to everyone else. It might actually be a fun family experiment for dinner time some night, but odds are nobody will be able to tell the difference.
Add Freddy's fry sauce in the mix too, same/same, although the jalapeno fry sauce is elite.
Which side of the paper does your check mark go on? Braum's or Cane's?
