Medicine Park may not be the most famous destination across Oklahoma, but after a transformation from being a rumored meth-capital to the hipster-friendly center for small locally-owned businesses it is today, it truly remains a real gem of the Sooner State.

A Short History.

Medicine Park was originally conceived as a resort town away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Lawton. It was a local lawyer/OK State Senator/and later US Representative and US Senator named Elmer Thomas who first proposed it back in 1906.

Lawton was a new town at the time, forming up outside the walls of Fort Sill. Elmer Thomas had a vision that the town would not only need a reliable water source as it grew, but also staked out a plan to build a place for recreation and relaxation.

Medicine Park was founded in 1908 and was one of the hottest destinations, particularly for the infamous, back in the early days. It was a glorious place to take in a little R&R until Thomas sold his ownership of the park to a corporation right before the Great Depression made things like rest and relaxation a memory of better times.

Medicine Park struggled through the Depression but managed to get back on its feet, sort of, in the 1980s through grants. Had a rumored rough time in the 90s, but by the time the new millennium came around, it had rebounded to the glory it is today.
