June is a milestone month across Oklahoma. It's typically when we say goodbye to tornado season.

That's not to say tornadoes don't happen in the Sooner State in June. In 2023, June had more tornadoes across Oklahoma than May did, but there were also zero recorded tornadoes in June 2024 after a combined 110 twisters in April and May.

You just really never know what the weather is going to do, but the National Weather Service is predicting, conservatively, higher odds for a severe weather outbreak for tomorrow, June 3rd, pretty much straight up the I-44 corridor.

June Severe Weather

As in most years, while tornadoes can and do occur in June, hail is the bigger threat.

As the daily temperatures warm, slowly heading toward another brutal summer, there isn't enough instability in the atmosphere to produce big twisters. Not in our part of the country anyway. But there is still enough to create some big hail.

In fact, our worst hailstorm ever in Lawton happened on June 15th back in 2023. We sat in the front office and watched DVD-sized hailstones fall in downtown for 38 minutes. We timed it. It was an exceedingly long hailstorm that lasted nearly two hours end-to-end.

The torrential downpour of rain was just as devastating that day.

With the record rainfall most for Oklahoma has already had this spring, there's a big chance of more flash flooding tomorrow too.

Aside from Tuesday, there a chance for rain and thunderstorms somewhere in Oklahoma for the next ten days.

Every portion of the state will get its share of the next system to slowly roll through. We've had so much rain, it's hard to fathom, but many Oklahomans are looking forward to the dry, humid, and brutal heat of summer.

May the force be with you.

Odd and Unbelievable Tornado Facts

As far as we've come in the technology surrounding severe weather and tornadoes, there's still a massive amount science still doesn't understand. Yes, there is a generally agreed idea of how they begin, the conditions needed, and the usual atmospheric conditions, but twisters are still wildly unpredictable. Even more fascinating are the strange and almost terrifying facts about these powerful displays of nature.

Tornado Records from Around the Country

With tornadoes on our minds the last few days, I started to wonder about many of the tornado records. How many in one day, biggest outbreak, strongest tornado in history, etc... While we all feel Oklahoma is the home of terrible tornadoes, the stats are somewhat surprising.
