Oklahoma gets one quiet day before the weather flips again. Thursday looks calm across most of the state, but strong winds and high fire danger are already setting the stage. By Friday, severe storms return, and some could bring large hail and tornadoes.

It's worth noting first and foremost that while Oklahoma should be dry for the rest of the day, there is considerable fire danger out in the western portion of the state.

Expect the winds to sweep down the plains.

Today (Thursday) is also likely the last dry day for a while across most of the state. Friday will be severe, but it'll be followed by a few days of April showers.

Given a 20% chance of rain is on the slight-to-marginal side of things, if you were planning on getting your weeds sprayed, this afternoon will be the day to do it.

If you're putting down a granular weed and feed mix, it'll probably be best to wait until after the severe weather, so it doesn't all wash down the street. Opt instead for the weekend.

Friday Severe

While nothing is off the table for three-quarters of the state, the main area of concern is going to be Northwest Oklahoma above I-40, covering also east up the I-35 corridor.

There are two scenarios that may play out.

First, there is a dryline set up out to the west. The first storms that might fire up will likely do so out west as the day heats up. These storms will have an emphasis of very large hail and tornadoes within them. Expected to be popcorn storms, small but powerful.

Second, as the cold front starts to sweep in early on Friday evening, the tornado threat will start to diminish. As the popcorn storms start to fill into a line of storms, hail will definitely still be on the table as it starts to form a major line of thunderstorms.

Recap

Thursday is a prime lawncare day for most of Oklahoma.

Friday will consist of two different storm systems throughout the evening.

The better part of the following week will see chances of rain each day.

Good luck. You've got this.

Odd and Unbelievable Tornado Facts

As far as we've come in the technology surrounding severe weather and tornadoes, there's still a massive amount science still doesn't understand. Yes, there is a generally agreed idea of how they begin, the conditions needed, and the usual atmospheric conditions, but twisters are still wildly unpredictable. Even more fascinating are the strange and almost terrifying facts about these powerful displays of nature.

Tornado Records from Around the Country

With tornadoes on our minds the last few days, I started to wonder about many of the tornado records. How many in one day, biggest outbreak, strongest tornado in history, etc... While we all feel Oklahoma is the home of terrible tornadoes, the stats are somewhat surprising.

10 Costliest Tornadoes in US History

When it comes to natural disasters in the United States, tornadoes are pretty spectacular. They're absolutely terrifying, deadlier than hurricanes and wildfires, and completely unpredictable. They're also some of the most awe-inspiring things to see in person. While they don't cost nearly as much as hurricanes and wildfires, they do get expensive in greatly localized areas. Here are the most expensive in US history.
