The Counties Getting the Most Tornadoes in Oklahoma Today
Last Friday night, while watching my favorite TV show - News9 Tornado Coverage - my old hometown was the star of the show. Good old Ponca City was having a tornado, and the show's main star, David Payne, dropped a line about how Kay County used to be the tornado capital of Oklahoma.
Now, I grew up there a little in the 80s, and a little more in the 90s, and I can remember many times having to hop down into the cellar... But it got me wondering, if Kay County was the center of Oklahoma's twister series back then, where is the tornado honey-hole now? So naturally, I hopped on Google and went down the rabbit hole.
Why Kay County Felt Like Tornado Ground Zero
Oklahoma's weather history is full of those half-remembered “everybody knows that” kind of statements that turn out to be either completely wrong or surprisingly accurate once you actually dig into the data.
In this case, the answer is a little more interesting than a simple yes or no.
Back in the 80s and 90s, Kay County really did get hammered by tornadoes. Kay just happened to be at the center of where the storm tracks just kept going back then. I don't remember much of it, I was a little kid at the time, but I do remember mom and dad hustling us underground pretty often.
After years of data and research, we know this period was less about Kay County and more about the broader weather pattern of those decades. Storm tracks shift over time.
Tornado Alley Is Not Static
While the current belief is that Tornado Alley is shifting, it has been debunked. The weather just trends through different patterns over many years. I think everyone in the Plains states pays attention to things like El Niño and La Niña. Those directly affect our weather throughout the year.
That is one of the things people outside Oklahoma do not always realize. Tornado Alley isn't a static area of storms. It breathes and wobbles. It'll slide east and west over the years. Some decades hammer Oklahoma, others light up other areas of the country. Kay County just happened to sit in the sweet spot during that time. Similar to how Oklahoma viewed Moore during the 2000s and early 2010s.
Today, the map looks different. Tornadoes are still very much part of our lives, but the hot spots have shifted around quite a bit. The counties that rack up the most tornado warnings, touchdowns, and damage reports now probably aren't where you're thinking.
The weather trends in the same way that books have chapters, and we may be turning a new page with the current, extremely active severe weather season we're having now. Which brings us to the list below.
These are the Oklahoma counties that see the most tornado activity now. Not based on vibes, memories, or storm-season folklore, but on the actual numbers.
