What to Put in Your Oklahoma Tornado Kit This Year
As we get straight into the severe weather season this year, now is as good a time as any to talk about what every Oklahoma family should have in their home tornado kit.
While the list may seem like a lot, you can totally tailor it to your family needs. This is just a general guide.
Keep in mind, this isn't a long-term kit. Storms are here and gone in a matter of hours. You're just looking to have the essentials on hand, maybe even a few creature comforts and entertainment to keep your kids' minds off the storm.
This is also the prime time to go over the family tornado plan. If the worst-case scenario does happen, you don't want to be running around the house gathering up stuff while the sirens are going off.
The Shelter
If you don't have an underground shelter or safe room, you want to be in a small interior room. The smaller the better. Closets, bathrooms, a hallway... They all work. The idea is to put as many walls between you and outside as you can. And just like every Oklahoma kid did in school, run the drill with the kids so they know what to do before they need to. Make it part of family game night. Make it fun for the kids. Even sit and play a round of Skip-Bo or Uno just to take the edge off.
If you don't yet have your Oklahoma tornado go-bag, here's what you'll need.
