Oklahoma Town Passes Ordinance to Ticket & Fine The Homeless
This Oklahoma small town has just passed a new city ordinance that would ticket the homeless. Starting mid-January any person caught sleeping or sitting on the sidewalk in the downtown area faces a $10.00 fine.

This will make the second city ordinance that Shawnee, OK. has recently passed that directly affects the homeless population within the community, specifically in the downtown area and in Shawnee city parks.

Earlier this year the Shawnee Board of City Commissioners passed a new ordinance that requires a permit to feed the homeless. It focuses on larger organizations conducting feeding operations in the downtown area.

Evidently, there's been a huge rise in the homeless population in downtown Shawnee over the past few years. Unfortunately at this time, there is no homeless shelter other than volunteer organizations and churches.

This newest ordinance (Sit/Lie) passed by the Shawnee Board of Commissioners by a vote of 6-1 also focuses on the downtown area. It makes it illegal to sleep outdoors or sit on the sidewalk in downtown.
Those who violate the new Shawnee city ordinance will be ticketed and fined $10.00
Law enforcement will provide a verbal warning first. Afterward, any repeated violation will result in being issued a ticket and a $10.00 fine. If a person is unable to pay a judge could issue community service instead.
