Oklahoma’s Worst-Ranked Town has the State’s Best-Ranked Middle School
Education has been a pretty hot topic across Oklahoma for the last - checks watch - thirty years. Teacher pay, education quality, national rankings, etc... have been some of the more focused issues with Sooner State learnin' historically. Trump Bibles and Ryan Walters have been the talk lately, but here's something nobody expected to read.
Oklahoma's highest-ranked middle school, given praises for educational quality and student success is ironically located in the universally worst city in the state.
Sadler Arts Academy in Muscogee is the #1 Middle School in Oklahoma
A few quick details about Sadler Arts:
- Total enrollment: 390
- Grades Kindergarten-8th
- Ranked #1 of Oklahoma's 402 middle schools.
What's truly amazing about Sadler Arts, on paper, is student proficiency. 71% of students score at or above proficiency levels for math. 70% at or above for reading. Even more impressive, the school manages this with jam-packed classrooms.
The average class size at Sadler Arts is 21 students per teacher. While that may not sound like a lot, it's the biggest average class size of all middle schools ranked on the "Best in Oklahoma" list until you get to #56 down the list - Carver Middle School in Tulsa (26:1).
Every middle school between the two averages a 16:1 ratio of students to teachers. Some have slightly more, many others have far less.
It's also worth mentioning, against initial thoughts, Sadler Arts Academy is a public school in the Muskogee Public School District.
In an otherwise onslaught of negativity (rightfully) hurled at our Oklahoma education system these days, I thought it was worth pointing out as a huge win and a bright light for our youth.
