Rejoice, A Cold Front Is Coming To SWOK

After an incredibly hot start to summer, Southwest Oklahoma is expecting a little reprieve going into next week, if the meteorologists are correct in their forecast. Goodbye 105°, hello 88°.

This front couldn't come at a better time. It wasn't until the second week of August that we hit 100° in 2021... As of June 24, 2022 we've already had 8 officially over that century mark plus 18 days so far this and last month pushing on that triple-digit threshold. As cold as winter was, summer has been equally as extreme so far and it's only just begun.

Naturally, most of the locals just accept that it's hot during summer down here, but our area of Southwest Oklahoma only averages about twenty days a year over 100°. Two days into the season we're nearly halfway there. It's stacking up to be a summer like we had in 2013 when we remained above that temperature for 100+ days. It didn't help that we were deep in a massive drought at that time too.

Like all things, the high and oppressive heat isn't without some benefits... My grass usually goes into summer dormancy by the time things heat up around July 4th, meaning I won't have to mow again until around Labor Day, but with this searing heat, my weed-free bermuda hasn't grown since mowing it a week ago. I don't mind the heat when I don't have to be out in it.

The yin on that yang is a higher electricity bill. Not only are rates for fuel skyrocketing to generate electricity, but we're also using more of it to keep our homes cool... but there are things you can do for that too that won't cost you any money.
