For the last five months, Oklahoma's weather has felt like it forgot what season it’s supposed to be in.

Summer hung around like it lost its keys. Fall barely showed up. And winter, well… winter sent a couple texts in early November, but never came over.

A Winter That Never Really Showed Up

We rolled through Christmas and New Year’s with highs flirting with 80 degrees. Shorts weather. Grill weather. The kind of days that make you double-check the calendar just to make sure you didn’t sleep through February by accident.

Now here we are in January, staring down a 50-50 shot that winter actually shows up before the month is over.

But here’s the twist nobody really wants.

Severe weather season is already knocking.

Severe Weather Season Starts Early

Forecast models are lining up a system set to move into Oklahoma later this week, starting Thursday. What began as a simple rain chance has slowly grown teeth. Rain is still badly needed across much of the state, but now hail has entered the chat. As of now, size estimates sit around quarter-sized. If this week's trend of meteorologists making wild speculations continues, we could be up to baseball-sized hail by the time the storms roll in.

It’s a familiar feeling for longtime Oklahomans. You hear “just rain,” then “maybe some small hail,” then suddenly everyone’s pulling cars into the garage and checking the roof deductible.

It is far too early for severe weather. Those couple of cold and snowy November days were not enough winter for any of us.

We’re still waiting on true winter weather. Folks want fire pits, hoodies, and that quiet cold that settles in during January evenings. Instead, we’ve been enjoying open windows and low utility bills, which honestly has been a small blessing with how expensive everything else feels right now.

Rain Is Welcome, Hail Is Not

The state is really dry overall, so any rain will be welcome. Mix in a little cold air and hot chocolate around the fire pit will feel right on schedule.

Why are we talking about severe weather before we’ve even scraped ice off a windshield?

Still, this is no reason to panic. Oklahoma's weather is wildly unpredictable, and the track record of every meteorologist confirms that as fact... but, you and I both know, once the spring hail shows up in a forecast, the weather rarely goes the other direction. Getting vibes of that February we had in the 90s a few years ago.

All the same, the current prediction is that winter will finally arrive in the Sooner State later this month. Cold air, maybe some precipitation... Or not. Nobody knows.

So while we’re still debating if winter ever plans to clock in, Oklahoma is already doing what it does best. Skipping seasons and keeping us guessing.

Enjoy the mild days while they’re here. Keep an eye on the sky this week. And maybe clear a little space in the garage, just in case.
