This past weekend the family and I where looking for something to do so we decided to take a little trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. It's been awhile since we've been out there, plus the weather was perfect for a quick hike and picnic. Before we hit the road we checked the TravelOK app to plan our attack and we even found some new places we've never visited before.

It surprises me how many people who live here and have never been to the refuge. We're very fortunate to have this in our backyard, it's just a short trip up I-44 and literally minutes away from Lawton, Fort Sill. Even if the great outdoors isn't your thing you can still drive through and see all the sites and wildlife. It's a beautiful drive and there's plenty to see and do, especially if you get out of the car and hit the trails.

We started our trip with a drive up Mount Scott to take in the view. After that we went to the visitor's center and spent some time there. It was time for lunch after that so we backtracked and ate at the Meers Store and Resturant. If you've never been there you've got to try it, they have some of the biggest and best burgers around. It's home to the world famous Meers burger.

After lunch we decided to walk it off and get a little exercise by going to Sunset and hit the trails for a little hike. I love Sunset and it's one of my favorite places to go in the mountains. A lot of great memories of trail walking, climbing and picnics. We wrapped up our visit at Sunset with a quick desert left over from lunch then we went to the Parallel Forest and walked around in there. It's a cool place to visit and is kind of creepy when it starts getting dusk. Of course we spotted lots of wildlife and took the time to pull over and watch the buffalo and longhorn, keeping our distance.

We traveled through taking our time and went down as many roads as possible enjoying the sites and landscape. We even checked out all the lakes and found some new fishing spots along the way. All in all we had a great time and it was the perfect day-cation we needed. So if it's been awhile since you've been, or if you've never been plan a quick trip and hit the road this weekend and spend some time in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Take the TravelOK app with you and find all kinds of great locations, hidden trails and special sites you can visit.
