Tornadoes and Hail On Tap in Oklahoma Today – Nov 18th
Only days after being forewarned of the possibility of a winter weather outbreak, Oklahoma meteorologists have pivoted back to spring. Large hail and the risk of tornadoes across the Sooner State and North Texas are the talk of the town this morning.
While the greatest chance was last night, the overnight and wee hours of today are also looking like fall twisters could peek their snarling faces out from behind the clouds.
There is no tornado season in Oklahoma.
While most will assume that it's nearly impossible or uncharacteristic for severe weather to be happening this time of year, it's quite normal. Being so wide-spread is a little weird, but tornadoes literally happen year-round in Oklahoma.
The big storms that come through during the fall do usually follow two usual outcomes... Soaking rains that last for days and the occasional freak snow event - but we've had hail and twisters before late in fall - just earlier this month across the state and historically in December too.
Tornadoes aren't the only worry for this storm.
I'm sure the weather app on your phone has already notified you, but the threat of flooding is high during the day. After a very wet start to November, the ground is saturated, so heavy rains are presenting a real risk of widespread flooding from North Texas up through Southern Kansas.
The OK Panhandle and SWOK is advised but excluded from this event.
A few locations in North-Central and NWOK are already experiencing flooding with trillions of gallons of rain still to fall.
As we roll through the day, stay weather-aware. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety. Make smart decisions as you go about your Monday.
Don't trust the perceived depth of standing or rushing water, it doesn't take much to float a vehicle away. Overpasses are not safe places to take shelter from storms. In fact, it's quite the opposite, especially in high winds and tornadoes. Hail is a real bummer, but vehicles are more easily fixed than the consequences of stupidity and bodily harm.
Best of luck Oklahoma. We got this.
