Is the City of Lawton Buying the Old Lawtonian Building in Downtown?
There's been a rumor circulating around town that the City is considering purchasing the old Lawtonian Apartments next to the Central Plaza in downtown Lawton. Maybe you've heard this rumor yourself.
I've heard this same rumor for the past several months, maybe even a year or so, prior to the FISTA Innovation Park opening. Despite all the talk so far it hasn't been officially confirmed by the City itself.
IS THE CITY OF LAWTON PLANNING TO PURCHASE THE OLD LAWTONIAN?
Now before anyone gets too excited or upset keep in mind it hasn't been announced, it's just a rumor. However, a lot of well-respected and connected people have somewhat secretly discussed this topic.
They're saying the City would use the property for housing and additional office space for those connected and/or employed with the FISTA Innovation Park. The City of Lawton already owns the mall, maybe it's true.
The Lawtonian is located 401 S.W. F Avenue next to the Central Plaza in downtown
The City of Lawton bought the Central Mall back in the fall/winter of 2020. Like now, we heard rumors about it, then it was announced that they purchased the mall for 14.6 million. Then spent millions more remodeling.
So will we be seeing the same thing happen with the Lawtonian? It's been empty since 2015 when it was shut down by the City Fire Marshal due to the elevators not working and the building not being up to fire code.
THE OLD LAWTONIAN APARTMENTS HAVE SAT EMPTY SINCE THE SPRING OF 2015
There's no telling what it would cost to purchase and completely remodel the building to make it livable once again. It's all rumors so far, but if there's any truth to this the City should bring it before the people.
The last thing the citizens of Lawton want is another massive purchase without a say. Or at least most of us anyway. Maybe we'll hear something official soon that will either confirm or deny this rumor once and for all.
