Not in recent history has there ever been a memorial race at the Lawton Speedway for a driver, the only other memorial race is named for the late track owner, Lanny Edwards, and happens late in the season, during winter nationals. This week the track honors driver Rob Bland.

I only met Rob Bland once but saw him several times over the years at the Lawton Speedway.  He was a racer, but he was so much more than that, he loved his sport and was always willing to help other racers be better at that sport.

Rob was killed in a horrible event late last year, and his death was devasting to racers and fans not only at the Lawton Speedway but at other tracks across Oklahoma.  He loved the speed and the competition. But so much more than that, Rob donated time and money to help families, and kids at various events sponsored by the Lawton Speedway.

Marcy Edwards Davis, track promotor at the Lawton Speedway said:

Rob was a true Lawton Speedway guy, he supported the track always and was so easy going.  He never complained and was the first to apologize if he caused mishaps during races.  He was such a fun, loving guy.

Lawton Speedway, along with the Lawton Speedway Drivers and Fans Association have made plans to honor their friend Rob Bland.

• During opening ceremonies Rob’s dad will be driving his car behind the pace truck as Kristen Crow spreads some of Rob’s ashes on the track. We are asking that the drivers and pit family wear Rob’s shirts if you have them or a bright colored shirt, and line the back straightaway wall and down to turns 3 & 4.
• Rob's limited modified race car will be parked in the winners' circle so that if the feature winners want, his car will be in their feature winner photo.
• After the races they will be having a “pit party” with volleyball in the infield for the DRIVERS and PIT FAMILY. There are a couple of rules - cars must be loaded, no side-by-sides, golf carts, or four-wheelers, and Lawton Speedway will not be responsible for any injuries. Please hang around after the races and help celebrate Rob!
There will also be commemorative Memorial Rob Bland Shirts available for purchase.

From the person who knew Rob Bland better than anyone, Kristen Crow:
Rob loved racing and the amazing people he met from track to track. The racing community was like a 2nd family to him. He worked so hard to make his car a winning car but where he finished was only a bonus. The real win for him was all his family and friends together having an amazing night at the track. He would have helped anyone all they had to do was ask wether it be to look at something or someone needing parts to get back out there.
Make plans now to attend the Inaugural Rob Bland Memorial Race.  Giving back to the sport that he loved so much.
