On Saturday morning, a vacant lot located at 609 SW Cody Place in the Ranch Oak area of South Lawton, became more than just open space; it became Lawton's latest community-based garden.

The community based Ranch Oak Community Garden became a reality on Saturday morning as a group of residents came together in the neighborhood south of Lee Blvd between Lawton Municipal Airport and the I-44. Plenty of hands, shovels and fertilizer were needed to transform the once weeded vacant lot into a garden where members of the community can plant and raise healthier food for their families. After the ground breaking ceremonies, a little hard work, blisters and some sweat, a barbeque was held for those in attendance, welcoming the garden into existence.

Organizers of both the event and the garden say it is symbolic of a time where neighbors came together to feed the community as a whole. Organizer Chelsee Dewberry, whose family owns the land the garden came to life on, says that the garden is there to help the community and teach children how to grow their own produce. The goal of the community garden is expansion, with a greenhouse next on organizers list. Dewberry further stated that another goal is to be an example to other communities and to spread the local garden concept to other neighborhoods.
