The weather really is wild in Oklahoma. In the span of four days, the forecast has flipped 180° on when the cold would arrive.

Just last Sunday, the forecast for cold winter-like weather was over a month away. Today, it's predicted to arrive next week. Not only cold temperatures but ice and snow too. This popped up on NOAA's Facebook page a few days ago.

As you can see, most of Oklahoma is in the alert for the possibility of some ice and snow next week. Portions of Western and Southwestern OK greatly favor these odds... but if a cool and wet July 2024 taught us anything, nobody really knows what's going to happen in Oklahoma on any given day.

Is that early for snow in the Sooner State?

Nope. Well, sort of.

We've had our fair share of October and November snow and ice storms over the years, but they're somewhat rare in the grand scheme of the almanac.

The cold would be coming in right on time, if not a smidge late. It doesn't normally get real cold until the week of Thanksgiving most years. And since Thanksgiving normally happens a week earlier in the calendar a lot of the time, it's technically right on time.

All the same, there have been plenty of 70° Thanksgivings across the whole of the Sooner State in the past.

UPDATE

If you've already made or changed Thanksgiving plans based on the extended forecast, there's a chance you'll have to do it again.

The forecast has changed, and likely will every day leading up to this cold weather event.

What does it mean? Are we good? No snow?

You know how the weather works in Oklahoma... Nobody knows what's going to happen outside later today, let alone a week from now. It's best to cover your bases with a 100% guaranteed forecast.

Next week will be mostly clear with likely periods of clouds. Temperatures will hover between cold and comfortable, maybe a smidge on the warmer side at times. There is a chance for rain/snow/sleet/ice and you can never rule out a tornado/snownado/thundersnow.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Oklahoma Cold Weather Checklist

Those first big cold fronts always seem to catch Oklahoma by surprise. In one big swoop, the nearly 100° days turn into sudden freezes overnight. We'll still have warm days here and there throughout winter, but now is as good a time as now to start on your cold weather checklist. Easy small tasks that add up to bother energy savings and comfort in the home. They'll also allow you to avoid the big headaches and repair bills that happen so frequently in our bipolar climate.
