Petition Filed in Oklahoma to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

You've probably heard all the rumors and stories online and elsewhere, well it's true. A petition has been filed by an Oklahoma cannabis advocacy group named ORCA (Oklahoman's for Responsible Cannabis Action) to legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and over. This would remove all the medical marijuana laws.

There are 2 ballot initiatives that have been filed that would amend the state constitution. One would make the purchase and use of recreational marijuana legal for those over 21. The other one would replace the current OMMA (Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority) with a new agency called OSCC (Oklahoma State Cannabis Commission). The new agency would be in charge of supervising recreational cannabis in OK.

In order for the petitions to be officially recognized and brought forward to be placed on a 2022 ballot each will require a minimum of 178,000 signatures. If recreational cannabis is passed the sales tax would change from 3% to 15% but you would no longer be required to have a medical marijuana card or incur other costs and charges to purchase or use cannabis within the state. A portion of the taxes would go to fund operating costs and expenses for the OSCC and provide funding to other agencies or affiliated groups that would be involved in oversight and management.
