The Oklahoma Moments That Defined 2025
2025 was one of those Oklahoma years where if you blinked, you missed three headlines and a minor existential debate.
It started early with Okana Resort finally opening in February. Big, shiny, long talked about. Then, almost immediately, the internet discovered it also came with bedbugs. Not exactly the launch anyone ordered. Still, credit where it’s due, Okana took the hit, cleaned house, and by summer most people were back to posting pool photos instead of warning labels. A very Oklahoma rebound.
Food news had a moment too. Bojangles announced its first-ever Oklahoma location in OKC, which felt less like a press release and more like a southern migration milestone. Shake Shack followed suit, opening its first spot in the state and proving once again that Oklahoma will absolutely line up for burgers if you give us a good enough story.
A State Treasure Now Gone
Tulsa finally lost its Stonehenge. After years of priceless memes and “is this a joke?” drive-by photos, the original installation came down. But because this is Oklahoma, the project didn’t die. It rebooted. New plans, new version, same confused but affectionate energy.
March was not playful. Massive wildfires tore through roughly 170,000 acres across the state. Whole stretches of land gone in smoke. A few hundred homes and barns went with it, and nearly 200 people were injured. It was one of those moments that remind you how fast things can change here when wind and drought team up.
Big Year For Politics
Politically, Oklahoma cut state income tax by a quarter percent, with leaders floating the long term dream of zero income tax someday. Oklahomans nodded politely. We’ve heard promises before.
Then came the Ryan Walters era ending, with the state’s least favorite son resigning as superintendent to become a private sector CEO. No parade. Just a collective exhale.
Add in multiple large AI and data center projects announced across the state, and suddenly everyone became a water expert overnight. Jobs sound great. Thirsty servers, less so.
Just The Tip
All told, 2025 felt loud, messy, and very Oklahoma. The kind of year we’ll be referencing for a while, usually starting with, “Man… remember when?”
