When it comes to working in Oklahoma, most people generally clue in on one industry. Oil and gas exploration, drilling, and processing... but you won't find any gas and oil companies near the top of the Sooner State's largest employers.

It seems odd, but ask any refinery or drill-rig employee you know... Oil and gas is an industry of small businesses, and it's big on hiring contractors. Just the single refinery in my hometown probably makes the job force up through a hundred different companies.

Alternatively, there are some massive employers across the state, and while some of them are given, you can guess right off the bat, there are some surprises in there too.

I don't think people realize just how many US Department of Defense jobs there are around the state. Everyone knows about the obvious posts like Fort Sill, Tinker, Altus AFB, and whatever is in Enid, but the DoD sprawls even farther off-post throughout Tulsa, OKC, Lawton, McAlester, etc...

Also, even though everyone jokes about Dollar General's popping up everywhere like weeds, every location comes with enough jobs to welcome this necomer to the list.
