Snow for Some, but Ice for Most in Oklahoma Forecast
It's always curious why we put so much faith in a forecast so far out. Just a week ago, most of Oklahoma was set on what was billed as the "biggest snow event of the year." Now, the day before it's to kick off, the snow estimates are small, but the ice is situation normal - very widespread.
It's an old-fashioned Oklahoma ice storm forecast.

As usual, the National Weather Service is being pretty conservative on expected weather conditions. There will be lots of rain, a little wintery mix, and the chance for snow in Northwestern Oklahoma. However, depending on where you live in the Sooner State, the overnight lows will make for some slippery starts to the work week.
It all starts Saturday night (2-8-2025) into Sunday morning.
It's not so strange to see freezing precipitation in February. This is almost always Oklahoma's coldest month as Spring tries to start pushing in early. Ice is common.
Strangely, winter weather will start in the southern portions of the state and seemingly backtrack into the Northwest until the front explodes over the next 96 hours.
Onward into Monday and Tuesday...
And Wednesday...
Now, if you're like me, you see the forecast for rain and maybe a wintry mix and think nothing of it, but the ice will be there. At least, it will be overnight and in the mornings.
While the daily highs will be plenty for safe travels and commutes, it's going to get frigid every night through Valentine's weekend. Lows in the teens and twenties in all corners of the state.
What about snow? They promised snow.
Some portions of the state, mainly those closest to Kansas will see some snow, but the forecast is still too loose to pin down exactly how much.
Depending on your local TV meteorologist, their forecasts differ anywhere between trace amounts to upwards of five or six inches in the same places. It really depends on which weather models they choose to follow, and how hard they want to sell it to you that particular day.
Assumed impacts.
At the very least, you'll want to plan ahead as we start into next week. It's going to be wet and very cold across a huge swath of Oklahoma. Even with light drizzle and fog, ultra-thin sheets of ice on the roads is very likely.
You'll want to give yourself plenty of time to safely make it into work through Wednesday or Thursday, or opt to work at home if you have that kind of choice.
I know that's hard for families with kids, especially if your local schools are closed for the Oklahoma mystery illness and rampant flu issues at the moment. You might dread trying to keep them out of your way during the at-home work day, but it's a far better alternative than being a headline on the six o'clock news because you can't drive.
As always, the forecast will likely change even more in another 24-48 hours. Best of luck to us all.
